We will examine several important precursors of the book, works that helped establish the genre in which Tolkien was writing, and those which influenced Tolkien’s own thinking. We will also enjoy and examine the story in terms of his overall mythology, aiming to see not only the literary aspects Tolkien uses to create the journey of Bilbo, but also how the book fits within the story of greater Middle-earth.
