Service Description
This course will examine the life of J.R.R. Tolkien and his famous novel "The Hobbit." We will examine several important events that influenced his writing like WW1 or his own children, the historical and literary context in which the text was written, how Tolkien's writing helped establish the modern fantasy genre, and other texts which influenced Tolkien’s own thinking. We will also enjoy and examine the story in terms of his overall mythology, aiming to see not only the literary aspects Tolkien uses to create the journey of Bilbo, but also how the book fits within the story of greater Middle-earth. This is the pre-requisite class to "Tolkien's Lord of the Rings" course.
